Ziauddin Ahmed was born in Bangladesh and received his MD degree from Dacca Medical School . He did an internship  and  2 years of orthopedic residency there. After completing a medical residency in the US at Mercy Catholic Medical Center and a fellowship in Nephrology at the Medical College of Pennsylvania (MCP) he was appointed to the faculty of MCP as Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine and Director of dialysis unit. In 1998 he was promoted to Associate Professor. Dr. Ahmed is distinguished by being certified in four specialties including Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Critical Care and Geriatrics.

He also has been in chairman of the continuous quality improvement program for the department of Medicine for over 20 year. Dr. Ahmed's research interests have focused on hemodialysis vascular access and new techniques in dialysis.  He has played a prominent role in bringing new technologies in End Stage Renal Disease and continuous renal replacement therapy into use in the Philadelphia area.

He plays a major role in the Nephrology fellowship training program at Drexel university and in Hahnemann  hospital, overseeing the ten fellows' participation in clinical research and the honing of their procedural and interventional skills. He takes very active role in teaching medical residents and students. He has received Charlie Swartz award in 2004 for excellent teaching commitment to Nephrology training.

He has developed two dialysis catheters, and one surgical technique for persistent peritoneal dialysis exit infection. He has published 27 papers and presented 84 posters at national Nephrology meetings. He was on the editorial board of Veterans Administration Health System Journal from 1997 to 2002. He has been on the international editorial board of Bangladesh Renal Journal from 1998 to present.

He is the past president of Bangladesh Medical Association Of North America (BMANA). His dynamic leadership has helped in organizing around 1200 practicing US physicians of Bangladeshi origin. During his tenure  branches of BMANA  increased from 2 to 15 in many states.  Dr. Ahmed also has been very actively involved in mentoring and training international medical graduates. He is very involved in social and cultural activities within Bangladeshi American community. He has created many slide shows and short films on poetry, literature and Bangladesh 's liberation war. He was convener of 3 rd Bengali poetry conference in North America in 1997.

Internationally he is the director of sister center of the International Society of Nephrology. Over the years he has introduced new nephrology technology to the physicians such as Continuous Peritoneal Dialysis in Bangladesh . He is one of the key the organizer of medical seminars and training in Bangladesh . In 2005 and 2006 he has organized two international seminars on infection control in Bangladesh for the first time. Infection control practice now being on the process of institutionalized because of this effort. He has helped in establishing some programs related to health care, children's education and other social activities in Bangladesh .
