Mr. M. Nasim Ali is the Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of SBLI USA Mutual Life Insurance Company, a $2 billion financial services company, headquartered in New York City. The first Bangladeshi "ACTUARY" in North America rose to the pinnacle of his profession in the Insurance industry, using his strong background in finance and economics as an actuary, and his leadership skills in marketing and management.
Achieving the top marketing position in a $2 billion company is rare for a first generation immigrant. Mr. Ali is considered a leader in the insurance industry, where he pioneered the development of a non-traditional distribution system for the financial services industry agents. Mr. Ali's career started at ALLSTATE as an actuarial assistant, where he was placed in a fast-track professional development program towards earning the Actuarial designation. After ALLSTATE, he was hired by USLIFE Corporation, a multi-billion dollar financial service company as Senior Vice President, to start and manage their Direct Marketing Profit Center. He became a Senior Vice President of this multi-billion dollar company at the young age of 34.
A brilliant student, he stood third in the combined merit list in SSC Exam from the Dhaka board, and then went on to complete `O' level and `A' levels from Walbrook College, London. After Walbrook, he studied at the London School of Economics, England where he graduated with high honors, majoring in Mathematical Economics and Actuarial Sciences. He then came to the USA to continue graduate studies in Actuarial Science. He was the first Bangladeshi in North America to become an Actuary. He has earned the professional designation of an Actuary from the American Academy of Actuaries and the Society of Actuaries.
Mr. Ali is very active in the Actuarial profession and Banking and Insurance industry activities. Mr. Ali has been very active in mainstream public and political activities. Governor James E. McGreevey appointed him to the New Jersey Governor's Asian American Commission in 2003. The Commission was formed in 2002 to recognize the continuing contributions of the Asian American community and to develop polices to improve the community's economic, health, educational, and social needs. He was the first Bangladeshi ever to be appointed to such a high profile position in the State of New Jersey.
The Asian American Heritage council honored him in 2004 for his contribution to the community, and also for his achievement in Corporate America. He has been appointed to the Board of Trustees for the Center for Hispanic Policy, Research and Development Council. He is an Executive Committee member of New Jersey's Asian American Public Leadership Forum. He is a member of Congressman Rush Holt's South Asia Advisory council, and he hosted fund raising events at his home for the Holt Campaign.
An active member with Bangladeshi communities both in the US and Bangladesh he was General Secretary of Bangladesh Associations both in Chicago and Philadelphia, as well as the Executive Director of a US-Bangladesh partnership forum. He is currently an Executive committee member of the Computer Literacy Program (CLP), an organization instrumental in launching computer literacy programs in the villages of Bangladesh. Mr. Ali sponsored the first two CLP centers in Bangladesh. He has been honored by FOBANA and other Bangladeshi organizations for his contributions to the Bangladesh communities in the USA, and has been a major sponsor/supporter of Bangladesh community events, including FOBANA.
Presently he is in the process of establishing a 300 bed Hospital and Medical College in Bangladesh through mainstream USA and Bangladeshi support. Mr. Ali has been involved in philanthropic works in Bangladesh through financing orphanages, girls' schools and colleges in his home town of Mymensingh.
He lives in Princeton, New Jersey with his wife, Laila Shirin and their two children; Shamafa (22) who is graduating from the Engineering school at Columbia University this month, and his son Zachary (16) who is a sophomore at the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey. He is an avid golfer and enjoys traveling.
