
Professor Hayat Mahmud

Prof. Hayat Mahmud has cemented his legacy as country's one of the legendary litterateurs. He is best known for his translation works, as well as for his autobiographical write-ups for children. As a successful writer, Mamud has published over a hundred of books on various genres including child literature, essay collections, Bengali language, autobiographical works and translations.
Prof. Hayat Mamud was born on 2 July 1939 to a Bengali Muslim family in the village of Maura in the Hooghly district
of the Bengal Province. He migrated with his parents, Muhammad Shamsher Ali and Aminah Khatun, to Dhaka in East Bengal as a result of the 1950 Anti-Muslim riots in West Bengal.
He received his bachelor's and master's degree in Bengali Literature from University of Dhaka and obtained his Ph.D on contemporary literature from Jadavpur University, Calcutta. Mamud has served as a professor of Bengali Language and Literature in Jahangirnagar University from 1978 to 2004.
For his excellence in child literature, Mamud received multiple awards from Bangla Academy and Bangladesh Shishu
Academy. He was awarded with Ekushey Padak, country's highest award for his influential role in Bengali literature in 2013.
